Daily Success for an elderly peregrino is symbolized by this statueDaily Success May 20 was a solid “Very Good.” The “it doesn’t count” aspects of my larger posts system is generally a penalty as I’ve been making real progress on the August 4 2021 post and have uploaded several videos to my YouTube channel. That might require some new adjustments as it’s been an obvious defect for quite some time. I don’t know how to fix it, however, as work input is not the same as progress and progress is subjective.

A bigger problem revealed itself last evening. My distance was much less than I wanted it to be, so I went for a post-dinner walk, backpack included. Getting started was a real struggle and I never did hit my stride. My pace was unusually slow. I only managed a couple kilometers, or less than two miles.

This morning, it gradually dawned on me that I’m suffering from real fatigue. My exercise spreadsheet shows that it has been six weeks since my last real day off. The last two weeks have been very high levels of activity. On top of that, I’ve been working on the upstairs porch deck for several days and that is also a bit strenuous as it involves a lot of kneeling, scraping, and stretching to reach awkward places.

It is time for a day off. My scoring system did not allow for that, so it had to be adjusted and I’ve uploaded the fix to where it’s shared with everyone on my Google Drive. The new score, “Mandatory Rest Day,” will show up for the first time tomorrow. I am as happy about this as I’ve been taking days off while hiking the Camino. Which is extremely not happy. It is, however, necessary.

Next week will include at least one session with Monika. In the meantime, my right shoulder will be getting tender loving care rather than be asked to help improve performance. That quest, my decisions to increase the weight used for various exercises, is an artifact of my youth and must be controlled at this point in my life. As Monika noted, “we all have a maximum weight that our bodies can tolerate” and I appear to have found the limit for the joint in my right shoulder just as I found the limit for both knees when I was forced to quit running some years ago. Now I just have to get it back to feeling as good as it was before I increased its load for several exercises.

But there are many chores lined up, so the day will be busy with minimal exercise and the porch floor off limits. It won’t be as nice a day off as visiting the Bilbao Guggenheim, but it’s all necessary stuff.
