Daily Success for an elderly peregrino is symbolized by this statue

Daily Success July 23 – Okay. Somehow, even though it should have been a relatively easy day for a good score, distraction happened.

Yesterday

Daily success yesterday got lost along the way. It began well enough with stretches and a good bike session, but distraction followed—lunch with my old friend Chetty, who appears to be ageless, a visit to COSTCO for my hearing aids—and zero shoulder rehab took place. That is not precisely true as a big chunk of stretches is based on shoulder stretches from physical therapy, but the scoring system doesn’t count them there; it treats them as stretches rather than exercises strengthening the muscles in the area.

My left knee went into full “you have deeply offended me” mode during a simple walk to Giant. A lot of ice and ibuprofen at bedtime followed. Some of the pain was such that I suspect sciatica is part of it. Piriformis, or what is being diagnosed as piriformis syndrome, was part of the problem too.

But the result was that a simple 1.8 kilometer (1.1 mile) walk was extremely difficult due to pain. There seemed to be three separate types of pain, one the dull area pain in my back and hip; one the stiffness and painful knee; and the third a sharp pain down the outside of my left leg that ended on the outer edge of my left knee.

Lovely. Just lovely.

The only good news is that a little progress was made on things like SAGEbot and seniorpilgrimage.com.

Today

Daily success today just requires discipline. There is a 9:40 AM Zoom about my piriformis; Kristin is the nominal person for that, but I don’t know if she will be available.

Exercise is going to be limited by my left knee. My plan for the next weeks is to avoid walking when practical at least until we get to France. The knee clearly responds well to rest but appears happy to pump the pedals on the bike. The current problem appears to have started with an attempt to up my game on leg strength either on the 13th or 15th. I tried adding some things on both days and the leg has been troublesome for about a week.

The Future

Daily success in the future continues to look the same as yesterday and the day before. Lots to be optimistic about and some real plans. Execution is the key.
